I am very pleased to introduce Wyatt Ambrose, who recently joined my trio, John O’Connor and his Fellow Travelers. Wyatt joins me and Tom Ives on bass with his tasteful and creative style on electric guitar. Wyatt is chiefly a jazz guitarist who studied at SUNY Purchase in the jazz program. Approaching my music, steeped in traditional American influences is a big shift for Wyatt and it makes for a kind of sound I have never included in any of the musical collaborations in my more than 50 years of musical experience. I’m very excited about it. We are currently doing local and regional gigs, with an occasional link to streaming platforms. I hope you have a chance to hear the trio.

My new album, Rare Songs, my first in more than, 20 years, is now available. The album was recorded in Brooklyn at Mighty Toad Studios and features some of the finest musicians in New York City. Many songs are recorded with horns; clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, trombone. Not your typical folk artists album, to be sure, but the production pays homage to the traditional styles for which my songs are known. It features 15 songs and more than an hour’s worth of music.
You may order a CD copy of Rare Songs by sending a check payable to me for $15. (4999 East Handsome Brook Rd, Franklin, NY 13775.) Please indicate the album you are interested in and information as to where to send the CD. I pay the postage. (My other CDs are also available. Songs For Our Times, Unravelin’, We Ain’t Gonna Give It Back and High Weather.
Rare Songs is available digitally from Itunes and Apple Music, as is Songs for Our Times and We Ain’t Gonna Give It Back.

POETRY NEWS
I’m very enthused to announce the publication of my new collection of poems, Mystery Station, from Hegel Creek Press.
The 29 poems are based on two rituals of the Catholic Church with which O’Connor grew up. Childhood itself is a mystery and the first section of the book, “Mysteries” concerns the mythologies of O’Connor’s childhood, his family and the new testament stories referred to in the themes of the rosary, a ritual his mother led her seven children through on certain occasions like automobile trips and the Cuban missile crisis; fifteen poems, each three verses long of ten lines each. The “Stations” section of the book contains fourteen sonnet length poems and is a personal meditation on pain, loss and redemption, using the muse of the Catholic penance vehicle, the Stations of the Cross.
Steve Kinzie says of the poems, “Their accumulative effect is deeply moving. That John carries both sections through with such discipline of form in a tone that is uniquely his own, marked by irony, pathos, wonder, humor, and so keen an awareness of human suffering is a remarkable accomplishment. The interfusing of the story of a (his) human family with the contours of the ‘divine’ family in the elaborate structure of Catholic piety has something in common with Brecht’s verfremdungseffekt: the drama of crucifixion with the stagehands smoking and talking and the piano and the clutter of sets and lights and ropes in view.”
Those who know me are aware that I am not a religious person, but naturally, I am molded by the Catholic culture I grew up with. My mother was devoutly Christian in a way that only Irish Catholics can be, and as a slave to memory, I couldn’t resist embarking on this project.
